The world today moves online and this we all know. However, it was
only lately that I became deeply conscious about its urgency. Maybe
I am just so lucky to be challenged as a graduate student to
discover more the world of technology so as to reap the immense
benefits of knowledge, great insights and exposure which it offers.
Personally, eLearning has broaden my knowledge and opened to me
a wide avenue for creativity, confidence and the commitment to share.
Everything can be discovered, learned and be invented online.
Sometimes I wonder if we really need a formal classroom set up.
This is because by having the knowledge and ability to handle
information from the various electronic gadgets - laptop, computer,
etc., students are able to be either ahead or at par with the teacher and the topic.

The world is a global village and technology is its common language
and means of communication. This is a reality that countries need to
know regardless of the stage of growth and standard. Change is taking
place every second and new ideas and inventions are introduced every
minute. Hence, local societies are to readily respond and adopt or else
be left in the margins and periphery of development. The ideal place to
initiate this change and strive toward inclusivity in the arena of
advancement is basically through education and its methods of
learning.
learning.
This reality of online learning ought to be welcomed with joy especially
for instructional leaders. There are now web based server software
featuring courses with designs which are installed on local servers for
learning. This minimizes the traditional method of classroom face-to-face teaching to a more advanced online method. I guess it also
challenges students to discover more beyond classroom discussion
considering the bulk of knowledge and learning that can be acquired
online.
eLearning or the use of electronic educational devices in teaching and
learning is essential for survival in the global world. Everything comes
to us online - new products, discoveries, news and happenings,
people, ideas, science, communication, friendship, marriage,
lifestyle, the future and many more are exposed and made real online.
Through technology, inventions are on the regular basis. People do
not have to be seated in a classroom to learn. In fact there are many
undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses offered online and
so degrees can be earned within the four square of ones room
thousands of miles away from the degree offerer or the University.
The challenge remains with us developing countries. Even if "...online
learning is the now big thing", the learning situation has not changed.
There are still majority of our learning centers including the big
institutions that have not reached that level of advancing with the
technological time and making the full use of it for online teaching and
learning. Lesson notes are still carried around on hard copies,
traditional boards and methods of teaching or imparting knowledge is
still on the move. Interactive boards are not utilized while the dusty
chalk still remains popular. Teachers though are trying but there is the
lack of experience and knowledge in fully utilizing the information
coming in through technology and applying it in the learning centers.
Teachers enter the classroom with their own expectations which may
be based on past experiences while young students bubble with the
energy of new ideas and discovery waiting to interact with their
teachers to be challenged to express it appropriately. Students
expectations sometimes are not met, they are also probably not
taught to utilize properly information nor allowed during class periods
to use their electronic gadgets for learning which sometimes produces
resentments among them. This is a waste of knowledge which could
dampen creativity and innovation.

The drive to implement effective online learning is so slow. The new
educational reform: K-12 could be the answer to the efficient utilization
of technological applications and online learning in order to compete
with other advanced countries to enable effective integration and
development. All of us are challenged to discover new ways of
appropriately responding to the signs of the times.

Knowing how important technology and online learning can expand
the human knowledge and intelligence, I sometimes wonder if the
remaining probably one third of the young people in the remotest
villages in the world I come from (Africa) have even heard or are aware
that they can learn and be educated in the security of their society
where they can be in touch with information in the world and with
others thousands of miles away as long as they have the necessary

From my point of view, I will be fare with the individuals and blame the
system. How easy it is to talk about the importance of online learning
when the system does not provide the means for the ‘...now big thing’
to fully come to stay in my part of the world. How can this be when
most leaders are concern with or engaged in wars, tribal instability and
focusing on providing basic security for their people? Though it should not be but these happenings shutter their focus from investing more
in educational advancement which could be the answer to the
persisting African problems.

Most rural areas with about 30% educational institutions lack access to
regular or no electricity and cellular coverage. Access to the web even
by wireless or any broadband means is a challenge considering the
absence of electricity, internet coverage or very limited reception thus
making online learning next to impossible. Even though in the urban
areas innovation is very fast and possible, irregular power shortages
sometimes cause delays in communication and irritability among
users. This is what keeps a country far behind development and
growth.

The reality will persist: "Online learning is not the next big thing, it is
the now big thing." To be a dynamic part of this movement, developing
country would have to face the challenge of responding to some major
and basic problems needing urgent attention. They would have to
evaluate and invest immensely first in financial resources by
maintaining a higher educational budget; secondly, in material
resources by providing the needed tools for equipping all educational
institutions with the necessary technology such as computers and
ensure a trusted utility system; finally, invest in human resources by
getting the right people and preparing them for the job. Only then can
these societies benefit from the utilization of online learning in this
twenty first century (C21st) and be partners with other developing
countries in the advancement race.

As teachers of this new generations we also need to explore on dealing with technologies. We should learn to embrace what is present and not letting ourselves be stagnant with our old practices. Education is never ending and we should not stop learning...God bless Sister Paulette.
